HERE ARE  SONGS OF JOY  WHICH ARE SUITABLE FOR SINGING AT GATHERINGS OF THE FELLOWSHIP OF JESUS AND MARY

by  Walter L. Williams
February 19, 2006

Music and singing go back to the very origins of human existence.  Singing touches something very basic in the human psyche.  It is almost as basic to spiritual growth as prayer and meditation.  Therefore, an important part of any campaign to develop a positive spirituality should provide a core of songs that members can enjoy singing together.  Such songs should be easily sung, even without instrumentation, and should promote a joyful and celebratory attitude toward life.

Below I have included the lyrics for some songs that I wrote, based on melodies of popular songs, that try to get across the ideals of a positive spirituality.  Please send me your suggestions for changes or additions that would help to improve these songs.  Better yet, choose a tune that you enjoy singing and write some lyrics that will help to promote a positive and accepting spirituality.

LOVE IS THE LIGHT
[lyrics by Walter Williams,
with thanks to Unity Fellowship for the melody]

Look for the light,  [clap twice]
     that distant light.  [clap twice]
If we detect it we’ll know it outright.
We can perceive with a little foresight.
A message is here for the world.

Head toward the light,   [clap twice]
     wonderful light.  [clap twice]
The words all appear as we leave the twilight
Study the message and then we’ll recite:
Love is the light of the world.

Accept the light,
    the truthful light.
Get rid of shame that makes some feel contrite.
Seek out the knowledge that helps us think right.
Love is the light of the world.

Come to the light,
     staggering light.
Release our guilt as we gain more insight.
As we learn goodness, we’ll read and we’ll write,
Love is the light of the world.

Walk in the light,   [clap twice]
     beautiful light.  [clap twice]
Come where the dew drops of mercy shine bright.
Shine all around us by day and by night.
Love is the light of the world.

Bring out the light,
     fantastic light.
Create a world where our love is all right.
Seek out and cherish the right that makes might.
Love is the light of the world.

Spread out the light,
     marvelous light.
To love who we wish to, that is our birthright.
When we tell others we feel great delight.
Love is the light of the world.

Live in the light,
     incredible light.
Reach for the spirit that’s within our sight.
We can advance as we live so forthright
Love is the light of the world.

Grow in the light,
       flourishing light.
The message is true and in this we'll unite.
Life is a blessing so live it upright.
Love is the light of the world.

Become the light,
      encompassing light.
Live in fulfillment, in daytime and night.
Enlightenment means that we know this outright.
Love is the light of the world.

Love is the light of the world.

Love is the light of the world.

JESUS IS OUR SHEPHERD
[lyrics by Walter L. Williams
February 25, 2006]

Jesus is our shepherd,
he guides us through our life.
He teaches peace and kindness,
    and never hate or strife.

We have a home in Jesus,
we love him through and through,
He always gives us good advice,
and tells us what to do.

CHORUS:
Jesus blessed the outcasts and the ones in pain.

He takes us in his family,
    we’ll never be apart.
With Jesus’ love,
    we’ll rise above,
    the torments of the heart.

Mary is our mother,
she loves us as we are.
Her love shines bright,
    and she’ll bring light,
to all both near and far.

CHORUS:
We’re brought into God’s embracing love so fast.
We’re so happy, that we’ve found a home at last.

Jesus loves us, everyone,
he came to say his part,
That all is well,
    and like a bell,
    he rings within our heart.

Jesus is compassion.
He shows us how to live.
And when we’re through
    it is so true,
we get more than we give.

CHORUS
We’re so grateful, Jesus loves us one and all.
We’re indebted for his teachings big and small.

Mary is devoted,
    she is a model life.
She gave the birth,
    that saved the earth,
          though not a legal wife.

Mary is a mother
who showed her child such love.
She was true,
    she paid her due,
    and shines down from above.

CHORUS:
We’re so grateful, that she built her family.
We’re indebted, love for all has set us free.

Our lives are ours for living.
    We know inside it’s right.
We follow our own spirit
that guides us to the light.

This is our new beginning,
    our life we cannot lose.
Others cannot force us,
to live as they would choose.

CHORUS:
We’re so happy, that we found our way at last.
We’ll keep working, to build a better life with class.

Every one is special,
    they have their unique gift.
If we can find
    and grow their mind,
    we’ll see their spirits lift.

Every one is special,
    we cannot waste a soul.
If we help them,
    then that helps us
    be happy when we’re old.

CHORUS:
We’re so happy, that we can help others too.
We’ll keep working, to make a better world ensue.

Love is never wrong now.
    Don’t let the prudes complain
That you and your belov-ed,
    show joy instead of pain.

They’re always interfering,
    condemning others too.
As they judge,
    they will be judged,
that’s just what fate will do.

CHORUS:
Prudes say sin is anything that pleasures us.
We know better, that joy is a great stimulus.

Love is sure the greatest gift,
    that we can spread around.
And when we do,
    we find it true
    let happiness abound.

Peace, love, and forgiveness
is what we ought to show.
For if we do,
    we’ll follow through,
    and make all sadness go.

CHORUS:
We now know it, that the goal of life is this.
To reach fulfillment, and bring about a life of bliss.

Jesus never said that
our love should be condemned
He promised the centurion
    to heal his love within,

Blessed are the eunuchs,
    Jesus’ words are true.
He spoke outside
    the average pride,
He spoke to me and you.

CHORUS:
Prudes say sin is anything that pleasures just.
We think sex is God’s great gift to each of us.

Greed, anger and stupidity
    are true sins to avoid,
What we can do,
    to follow through,
is that with which we’ve toyed.

We’ll start a reformation,
    for Jesus’ sake we must,
For he thinks how
    the Christians now
are all hung up on lust.

CHORUS:
We’re fed up with bigots using Jesus’ name.
We’re recovering Jesus and that is our aim.

Overpopulation,
greed, poverty, and war.
These all bind
to face mankind,
    and make our problems soar.

We have to think quite rightly
    of how we resolve these
Conditions from our wasteful past
that we can solve with ease.

CHORUS:
Sin is poverty existing in the midst of wealth.
Sin is pollution and ignoring public health.

Jesus condemned Pharisees.
    He called them hypocrites.
If he came here,
    he’d find them near
    to certain governments.

Prudes claim to be good Christians,
but all they hate is sex,
They decry gays,
    abortion stays,
and soon you will be next.

CHORUS:
If you want to reach to Jesus up above,
You’ll realize he likes outcasts and favors love.

Join us in our effort
    to turn this world around.
With Jesus’s love
    and God above,
    and many on the ground.

We are a reformation,
    in Jesus’ name we’re true,
We’re lovers of humanity
    and Jesus loves us too.

CHORUS:
We’re fed up with bigots using Jesus’ name.
We’re recovering Jesus and that is our aim.

He’s been betrayed, by those who
    stop freedom in his name.
They claim to be his followers,
but act wrong still the same.

They cannot preach his teachings,
    since Jesus teaches love.
He is still there,
    his loving care,
    remains from high above.

CHORUS:
Jesus loves us, we are all God’s children now.
Jesus blessed us, and he’ll never break his vow.

We want to have compassion,
    show kindness every day.
And when we’re done,
    we’ll have some fun,
and this is what we say:

We try to bring great happiness,
    we like to play around.
And when we’re done,
    we have more fun,
and this is what we found:

CHORUS:
We’re so grateful, that we have the gift of life.
Jesus always brings about the end of strife.

If we control our selfishness,
    avoid it every day,
Then we’ll find,
    we’ll change our mind,
    and live another way.

Be gracious toward all beings,
share what we have to give.
Provide for them,
    for her and him,
and that is how to live.

CHORUS:
We’ll rise higher, when we give in word and deed.
We’ll be happy, when we share with those in need.

If we can change inside ourselves
    to focus how we think,
We’ll soon find,
    we’ll share our mind
    with others we can link.

Peace is the goal of living.
be smart and that is how.
We’ll always try
    to explain why,
that hate must stop right now.

CHORUS:
Reach fulfillment, that is what we aim to do.
Be enlightened, that is good for me and you.

End ignorance and bigotry,
it makes us all so sad.
Greed, anger, and stupidity
    are certainly quite bad.

Those are the adverse qualities
    we strive to rise above.
To end all hate,
    at any rate,
    to replace hate with love.

CHORUS:
Defuse anger, that is what we need to do.
Challenge injustice, that is necessary too.

Turn poison into medicine,
is what we like to do.
Then we can find,
    we’ll change our mind,
    and good will follow through.

Mary’s generosity,
    shows others how to live,
Then when we’re through,
    we’ll see it’s true,
we get more than we give.

CHORUS:
We are learning, we can be creative too.
We help others, that is what we like to do.

Violence is perverted,
    it’s evil through and through.
If we can find,
    a love so kind,
    non-violence will ensure.

We want to change the world now,
to change it for the best.
Bring happiness into our lives,
    and Jesus does the rest.

CHORUS:
We’re so grateful, that we have the gift of life.
Jesus always brings about the end of strife.

He is the one we turn to,
     We pray now every day,
He helps us find,
     a peace of mind,
    that wipes our tears away.

Dear Jesus gives us guidance,
    and Mary gives us peace.
They both can make our lives so great,
    our problems soon will cease.

CHORUS:
We’re so grateful, that to Mary we will bow
Jesus tells us we are blessed people now.
